How It Works

jester2.jpg

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:
“What actually happens when we start training with you?”
Hopefully, the steps below will give you a good idea of what to expect -
and how easy it is to get started!

1

First: a good chat
I'll ask about your dog’s personality, training history, any tricky behaviours, and what you’d like to achieve - from solid recall and loose-lead walking to advanced gundog work or help with specific behavioural issues. The more I understand, the better I can tailor a plan to suit you and your dog.

2

Getting to know each other

For our first session, we'll meet somewhere outdoors that’s convenient for you: parkland, woodland, or common ground. I’ll build an initial bond with your spaniel and run a few simple drills to get a feel for their temperament, ability and focus, as well as your handling style.

3

Strengths & boundaries

During that first session I’ll gently explore your spaniel’s boundaries and your own skills as a handler, so we know exactly what we’re working with. This gives us a clear, honest starting point and helps shape the right approach going forward.

5

A tailored plan from Session One

From our first session, I’ll be able to recommend a sensible plan that will help you achieve your goals with your spaniel. Most clients train once per fortnight, which gives you time to practise the homework I give you, and allows us to see real progress.

Ongoing support between sessions

You’ll receive a clear summary email with structured notes and homework after each session. If you have any questions or setbacks in between sessions, or if you just want to check you’re doing things right, just call me. This helps prevents bad habits and helps you develop confidence as a handler. This is a partnership, not just a regular appointment!

Practical details

Sessions are 1 hour and cost £40, payable on the day. I train in all weathers, but safety and comfort are paramount, so I would never train in very high winds or named storms. I operate a 24-hour cancellation policy, but naturally I understand life’s curveballs, and I can be flexible to accommodate issues.

Once you’ve reached your goals, sessions can be spaced out to suit your ongoing needs. Many clients like knowing they have ongoing support as their spaniel grows and changes: some come back for regular monthly check-ins, whilst others like to book ad-hoc top-up sessions to troubleshoot issues or to learn new skills whenever they want.
